One of my favorite moments, happened in a group ceremony.
We were about 4 or so hours in and one of the participants started singing out of nowhere. It was a song without words but instead consisted of deep, resonant tones from the depth of his own unconscious. Like a drink of cool water on the side of a long marathon, each of the other participants, myself included, began to sip it in. Then another voice joined in from the group. And before long each and every one of us was singing and toning together.
Each voice was so unique and personal, but like a well trained troupe of bards, those individual threads wove together to form the most exquisite braid of harmonious sound. We sang together for maybe no more than 10 minutes and then the chorus began to thin as each voice found its way to silence, save for the one voice that had started it all. Finally he ended his song and we all smiled together, recognizing we had just experienced something miraculous.
Still somewhat mesmerized, I asked the guide who was holding the ceremony: ‘What on earth was that?!’ There was a brief pause before he responded with a sly grin and somewhat rather mischievously:
’That was some IS-NESS, that wanted to come into BEING’
The whole room exploded into Laughter.
